BHCC is an active player in finding solutions to challenges facing the Greater-Boston area Early Childhood Education and Care Community. The College currently manages multiple grant projects focused on training high-quality educators prepared to work with young children in surrounding communities. BHCC seeks an Academic Counselor for current and future grant projects and special initiatives in the area of Early Childhood Education. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Professional Studies, this is a Full-time position for Academic Counselor in Early Childhood Education. This position will provide continuous academic and transfer advising to prospective, new and continuing students studying Early Childhood Education at Bunker Hill Community College. The advisor will use a holistic student support model that includes proactive advising, but not limited to:



  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically minoritized populations) and maintain an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Create and deliver culturally responsive student programming that promotes a safe, supportive atmosphere for exploring one's ethnic identity, aspirations, challenges, and other topics of interest.
  • Building collaborative relationships with different offices on campus to provide appropriate support services, such as: academic tutoring, English language practice and supplemental instruction, or accommodations for disabilities, financial literacy skills development, and emergency assistance.
  • Serve as the primary Academic Advisor to a caseload of students, assisting with creation of academic and career plans.
  • Provide academic, career, and transfer advising services to continuing students in person as well as utilizing remote learning platforms aimed at improving student engagement, retention, and graduation.
  • Assist with the advisement and registration of all new and continuing students regarding their academic plan, course selection/sequencing, curriculum/concentration selection and changes, career exploration and plans to transition to a 4-year institution.
  • Collaborate with community-based partners to provide a smooth transition and ongoing support for students matriculating into the College.
  • Participate in required and optional professional development in the form of college wide, division and department meetings and trainings.
  • Use data to monitor student retention and goal completion.


Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or a closely related field; with three (3) years of experience and/or training involving academic and/or financial advising, student recruitment/retention, student services, or counseling, or comparable experience in an institute of higher education or client-based community organization; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with a wide range of people and groups;
  • Knowledge of student development concepts, principles, and practices in coaching strategies;
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in student information systems and technology as well as MS Word and Excel;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bilingual: Spanish and English
  • Experience working in a community college.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts EEC licensure.


Additional Information:

Salary: $54,956.00-$60,000.00 Actual Salary Will Be Commensurate With Education & Experience in Accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full state Benefits.
