Assistant Professor in Exercise Science and Exercise Science Internship Coordinator
Position Summary
The School of Health Sciences at Lasell University in Newton, Massachusetts invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, 9-month appointment as an Assistant Professor in Exercise Science with responsibilities as the Exercise Science Internship Coordinator, beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.
As the field of Exercise Science continues to grow and evolve, Lasell University's Exercise Science program is experiencing similar expansion. In Massachusetts alone, job growth in exercise science-related fields is projected to increase by approximately 30% by 2032. Nationally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the healthcare sector to grow 13% from 2021 to 2031, well above the national average. Within this context, the addition of a faculty member who also serves as Internship Coordinator is critical to supporting student success, program quality, accreditation expectations, and continued enrollment growth.
This position is designed to strengthen internship oversight, enhance advising capacity, and provide instructional support across undergraduate and graduate Exercise Science programs, while fostering stronger connections between academic coursework and professional practice.
Responsibilities
Teaching Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Exercise Science courses aligned with their expertise and program needs. Teaching responsibilities may include both lecture and laboratory instruction and may extend to graduate-level coursework as appropriate.
Proposed undergraduate teaching assignments may include:
- EXSC410/420/425 Internship/Field Experience in Exercise Science
- EXSC302 Exercise Physiology
- EXSC202L Exercise Physiology Laboratory
- EXSC308 Analytics in Sports Performance
- EXSC222 Kinesiology
- EXSC222L Kinesiology Laboratory
- EXSC209 Performance Nutrition
Teaching in Lasell University's core curriculum may be necessary. Opportunities may also exist to teach select courses in related graduate programs.
Faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, utilize applied and experiential learning approaches aligned with Lasell University's Connected Learning philosophy, and contribute to curriculum development as programs continue to evolve.
Exercise Science Internship Coordinator Responsibilities
The successful candidate will serve as the Exercise Science Internship Coordinator, with responsibility for overseeing all aspects of undergraduate internship and field experience placements. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating and approving internship sites to ensure alignment with program outcomes and accreditation standards.
- Evaluating internship sites, particularly those related to strength and conditioning and performance settings.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with clinical, performance, and industry partners.
- Supporting students throughout the internship process, including placement, supervision, and evaluation.
- Collaborating with faculty and program leadership to integrate internships into the academic curriculum.
- Supporting assessment, data collection, and continuous improvement efforts related to experiential learning.
Integrating the Internship Coordinator role into the faculty structure supports stronger student relationships, improves placement quality, and enhances student preparedness for professional and graduate pathways.
Advising, Mentoring, and Service
- Advise and mentor undergraduate Exercise Science students.
- Serve as a capstone or applied research advisor for undergraduate students.
- Participate in departmental, school, and university service, including committee work.
- Support recruitment and retention initiatives through engagement with prospective and current students.
- Collaborate with faculty across undergraduate and graduate programs to support student transitions into advanced study at Lasell University.
This role will help balance advising responsibilities across the department and improve faculty capacity to support a growing student population.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or a closely related field.
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate, evaluate, and oversee internship or field experience placements.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to student-centered education, advising, and experiential learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- ACSM Exercise Physiologist Certification (ACSM-EP) or Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC, LAT)
- Experience teaching undergraduate Exercise Science courses (lecture and laboratory).
- Experience working with clinical, performance, or applied sport science internship sites.
- Experience teaching graduate-level coursework.
- Familiarity with accreditation standards related to Exercise Science or allied health programs.
